This is a dynamic, influential media and campaigns role at a charity that punches well above its weight. As the voice of the hospice sector in the UK, we regularly secure top tier national media coverage, and our ability to do so has been growing year on year. Recent coverage includes this story about the deficit facing the hospice sector, which was featured across BBC national bulletins, and in around 500-600 outlets in total. We are now regularly able to secure packages of this nature.

We’re well known and respected in Westminster and the devolved governments, and our 200+ hospice members depend on us to push for the reforms that are urgently needed in end of life care in the UK.

This role leads the organisation’s media strategy and contributes to our wider digital communications and campaigns presence. Working with influential journalists and supporting our policy and public affairs colleagues in their Parliamentary engagement work, it is a fast paced and enjoyable role. With a new strategy in place and a new brand to launch soon, we’re aiming to become bolder and more influential in what we do and say, and our media work is a centrepiece of that project.

With the election coming up, it should be an exciting period for the team to do what we can to make sure end of life care is a priority for all political parties. And with conversation about assisted dying also growing, we feel we have a vital role to play in what will be a challenging national conversation.

We’re looking for a seasoned media relations professional who has a track record of securing top drawer coverage, working with national journalists to negotiate complex and sometimes sensitive stories. You’ll need strong influencing skills to work with our network of local hospices, encouraging and supporting them to take part in national media work. And you’ll need good political nous combined with the creativity and tenacity to build a good media package.

The role also has shared responsibility for overseeing some of our digital content and social channels, particularly X and LinkedIn, and so while you won’t need to be a technical expert in social media management, you’ll need a good eye for what makes engaging digital content.

The role line manages one colleague, our brilliant Senior Media and Communications Officer. Line management experience is desirable, but not essential.

More information about the role can be found in the candidate information pack below.

If you would like to ask any questions before applying, you can contact Charlie King on c.king@hospiceuk.org

The Team

The role is part of the External Affairs department, which brings together our communications, campaigns, member engagement and policy and public affairs work. We’re a relatively small team, around 15-20 in total. Our size means that we all know each other well, and work closely together day to day – and while things can and do get busy, it allows us to be nimble and responsive, too. We’re really proud of the work we do and we all feel that over the past 12 to 18 months we have really built up some excellent momentum, particularly in our media and public affairs work.

Hospice UK

Hospice UK is the national charity for hospice and palliative care. We provide support, leadership, expertise and advocacy for over 200 member hospices across the UK.

Our membership offer for hospices and their staff teams includes online resources, newsletters, conferences, networks, clinical and advocacy programmes. We bring hospices and sector partners together to discuss new ideas and collaborate in new ways, sharing good practice and celebrating the brilliant and innovative work that happens every day in hospices around the country.
